European Eel, Common Eel
Anguilla anguilla are known for their remarkable lifecycle, migrating from inland waters to their breeding grounds in the Sargasso Sea. During this journey, they undergo significant physiological transformations known as 'elver' and 'silver eel' stages. Though they face numerous environmental challenges, including habitat loss and barriers to migration, they continue to captivate researchers and conservationists alike.
Distribution
Native to a wide range covering most European coastlines, including rivers and lakes from the North Atlantic, North Sea, Baltic Sea, and the Mediterranean basin. Also found in North Africa.
