Butis butis

The Butis butis, or Duckbill Sleeper, is a unique fish species recognized for its elongated body and pointed snout, reminiscent of a duck's bill. It exhibits fascinating behaviors, like the ability to rapidly change colors to blend into its environment, aiding in both predation and protection from predators. They are known to be aggressive and territorial, especially towards conspecifics. Hence, providing ample space with a well-decorated tank featuring hiding spots is advisable. They are predatory, with a diet comprising small fish and invertebrates, making them unsuitable for community tanks unless with other similarly-sized, robust species. When kept in captivity, feeding them live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and small fish is recommended to mimic their natural diet. Their adaptability to different water conditions, coupled with distinctive biodiversity, makes them an interesting but challenging addition to a dedicated aquarium.
