Corydoras armatus, also known as the Armored Catfish or the Giant Cory, is a popular freshwater fish species among aquarium enthusiasts. Native to South America, specifically the Amazon River basin, this species is recognized for its distinctive armored appearance and peaceful nature. Armatus has a streamlined body shape with rows of bony plates covering its sides, providing protection against potential predators. When it comes to caring for Corydoras armatus in an aquarium, it is essential to recreate their natural habitat as closely as possible. A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended to accommodate a small group of these catfish. Provide a sandy or fine-gravel substrate to mimic the soft riverbeds they inhabit. Additionally, it's crucial to maintain good water quality, including regular water changes and filtration, as armatus are sensitive to poor water conditions. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water with a temperature range of 72-78°F (22-26°C). Corydoras armatus is a social species, so keeping them in a group of five or more individuals is advisable. They are peaceful by nature and can be kept with other non-aggressive fish species, such as tetras or dwarf cichlids. Ensure that the tank has plenty of hiding spots like caves, driftwood, and plants.
