Geophagus surinamensis is known for its peaceful nature, making it a suitable species for community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. They are substrate sifters, using their elongated mouths to filter food from sand, so a soft substrate is recommended. In captivity, they are known to display vibrant stripe patterns, especially in males during the breeding season. Adequate swimming space and some territory (e.g., caves or rock structures) are needed, as well as moderate water currents. Regular water changes are essential to simulate natural conditions, especially if they are kept in slightly overstocked tanks.
