Neolamprologus sexfasciatus is a territorial species, often forming hierarchical social structures. They thrive in rocky or shell-filled aquarium settings where they can hide and establish territory. Adequate tank space is essential for maintaining multiple individuals due to their aggressive nature towards each other, especially during breeding. These cichlids are carnivorous and should be fed a diet rich in protein, including high-quality flake, pellet, and frozen foods, supplemented with shrimp or fish fillets. Care should be taken to avoid foods with excessive fillers which can negatively impact their health. Breeding can be challenging but rewarding. They are cave spawners; thus, providing suitable hiding spots within the tank will encourage natural behaviors. Once the fry are free-swimming, they’ll require specialized care with smaller foods like baby brine shrimp.
