Piaractus brachypomus
Pirapitinga, Red Bellied Pacu, Red Pacu
This species is often mistaken for the Piranha but is actually herbivorous, feeding mostly on fruits, nuts, and plant matter. Domestically grown individuals can become quite large, hence require substantial tank space. They are peaceful, yet social fish which thrive best in groups and with plenty of swimming space. Not suitable for beginners due to their size and dietary needs.
