Pseudotropheus crabro exhibits a striking yellow and black banded pattern, reminiscent of a bumblebee, hence its common name. Known for its aggressive territorial behavior, particularly in smaller aquariums, it is best housed with other robust African Cichlids. This cichlid is also unique due to its symbiotic relationship with the bagrid catfish Bagrus meridionalis. Juveniles can clean the catfish, picking parasites off its scales.
