Macropodus ocellatus is a hardy, labyrinth fish known for its resilience and ability to survive in less-than-ideal conditions. The species is well-suited for temperate aquariums and doesn't require a heater. They possess a labyrinth organ, allowing them to breathe air directly from the surface, making them more tolerant of low-oxygen environments. Tank setup should include plenty of hiding spaces with rocks and plants as Macropodus ocellatus can display territorial behavior, especially during spawning. Due to their resilient nature, they can live in outdoor ponds in warmer months but should be brought inside or adequately insulated in colder climates. Diet includes high-quality flake foods, pellets, live, or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.
